New and Fairly New Annuals 2008

Achillea ‘Gypsy’: A short, double-flowering white yarrow with a yellow center; semi-trailer;
good alternative to Bacopa if need something heat and drought-resistant.

Alocasia (Upright Elephant’s Ears): Huge, critter-resistant leaves point upward and sway in the breeze; add lots of focal impact to the garden or containers; dramatic; rich soil with adequate moisture for best performance; most thrive in high light to 80% shade; take inside for the winter:

 

cuprea ‘Wentii’: Thick leaves are long (16-20”), heart-shaped ovals; shiny dark green with burgundy underside; 2’.*
 

 
  'Frydek’: Dark green leaves with bright white veining; probably1-2’ but possibly taller.*
 
 
       

Alternanthera (Calico Plant, Joseph’s Coat):

     
 

Brazilian Red Hots’: Bright pink and purple; an upright grower; 18" tall and 10 to 12" in spread; sun or partial shade.*
 

 

 
         
  ‘Burgundy Threadleaf’: Narrow, burgundy and green foliage; 6-10"; sun or partial shade.*    
         
 
Party Time’: Bright pink and green, upright foliage that obviates the need for flowers; excellent in sun or partial shade; 12".*
 
   
         
  ‘Royal Tapestry’: Has a trailing habit; excellent as groundcover or in containers; foliage is multi-hued shades of copper, purple, burgundy, and red depending on season; excels in heat and humidity; sun or shade but color darkest in sun.*    
       
Anagallis Wildcat SeriesTM (Pimpernel):. Larger flowered, more compact and earlier blooming than other Anagallis. These cultivars bloom non-stop from late spring through fall; thrives in warm, dry conditions; grows 6-12". Blue* or stunning bright orange* flowers centered with a hint of blue and yellow stamens; sun.

 

 
       
Begonia, Nonstop - Mocca Series: The flowers are the same but the foliage is dark, almost chocolate brown.
 
 
Brugmansia: Similar to Datura but large trumpets are face down instead of up; ‘Grand Marnier’ is soft apricot-pink; ‘Snowbank’ is pale pinky apricot and white above green and white variegated foliage; see list for other colors; most grow 4-5’; sun.
 
   
Calendula: A triple-layered daisy with a dark center; nice alternative to marigolds; known to the French as "souris" (smiles); only 10"; full sun.*
 
   
Carex ‘Toffee Twist’: A small, mounding, ornamental grass with bronze foliage that is an excellent foil for almost any other color in a container.*
 
 
Cleome ‘Senorita Rosita’: This new cultivar has darker green foliage and keeps the foliage all season; flower is lavender; 3-5’; scored very high in Clark County trials; doesn’t set seed so doesn’t need to be deadheaded; no thorns; full sun.

  ‘Wizard Coral Sunrise’: Shades of pink with dark olive feathering and bright green, serrated border.*
 
     
  ‘Wizard Pineapple’: Bicolor of slightly golden, chartreuse yellow and large red splotches; goes well with yellow, red, purple or pink and puts on a great show; does well both in sun and shade.*

 
   
Colocasia ‘Black Magic’: A black Elephant Ear that is absolutely spectacular in the garden; used it last summer as background for purple fall-blooming asters; 4-5’.

Electric Pink’: A foliage plant that you could use instead of Dracena (Spike); picture shows bright pink leaves but description says middle of leaf is dark maroon; sun or light shade.
‘Dark Star’: Grayish-burgundy foliage; 36".
‘Purple Prince’: Rose and green foliage; 2-4’.*
‘Red Star’: Dark burgundy red foliage; 36".
‘Sundance’: Green leaves have narrow pink stripe in middle and pink at base of plant

Cyperus ‘Baby Tut: Moisture and water loving grass-like plant but keep crown above water; 18-24"; sun or partial shade.*
 
Dahlberg Daisy: A bushy, much-branched little annual with deeply divided, threadlike leaves and a profusion of small yellow daisy flowers; a trailing habit, getting 6-12 " high and spreading a little wider; leaves have a pungent, lemony odor when crushed or bruised. Plant in site with good drainage; drought tolerant; sun. *
 
   
Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’: Has branches of velvety-soft, fan-shaped, silvery leaves, glistening silver stems, and a "never-say-quit" cascading habit that spreads up to 6 feet! Heat and drought tolerant; even if wilted, recovers quickly; full sun.*
 
   
Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost’: Just keeps on flowering with clouds of small, airy white flowers from late spring until frost; great for combining with larger flowered plants in hanging baskets and containers or in ground where its wispy form adds style and texture; Ohio State award winner 2005; heat and drought tolerant; sun to partial shade. *
 
   
Felicia ‘Cape Town Blue’: This Cape Town Daisy is a more compact and free flowering variety; requires a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil; keep well watered; use as a cut flower or in window boxes, pots, and rock gardens; 8-12".*
 
Geranium:
 
 

Blue Wonder’: This may be the first true lavender geranium; have to admit that I’ve only seen pictures but they actually look lavender rather than pink or fuchsia.
Vancouver Centennial’: This fancy-leaf geranium has bicolored leaves and bright orange flowers; wonderful annual for containers;  sun to bright shade. *

Gomphrena Qis Mix: The mix includes the typical purple, pink and white but adds orange and scarlet; 24-30"; good cutters; full sun. *
   
Iresine ‘Blazin’ Rose’: Iresine is native to tropical areas of Brazil and Ecuador and represents another great choice in colorful foliage for the landscape; their ideal location is in sun until around mid-morning and then shade or filtered light; will look at home planted in the garden or a container with other tropicals as well as hostas; as a ray of sun penetrates tall trees and strikes these plants, they will appear to glow with electricity; large, rose and green foliage on hot pink stems; plant in fertile, well-drained soil; feed monthly; 12-14" by 16-20".
   
Jamesbrittenia: A new arrival that resembles a bright Bacopa; ‘BritneyTM Grand Red’ is dark red with a dramatic halo of maroon, all surrounding a large golden center; each blossom is about an inch across; much more abundant than the Bacopa with which we are familiar; 6" high but up to 2’ wide or trailing; ‘BritneyTM Grand Pink’ is dark rosy-pink with a dramatic halo of purple; full sun to partial shade; great for containers.*
 
   
Laurentia ‘Beth’s Blue’: Grew this last summer and loved it; true blue stars that last all summer and fall; drought tolerant; 12-14; finely textured foliage; full or afternoon sun.*
 
   
Lotus (Parrot’s Beak): Finely textured, silvery foliage on long strands that make this plant ideal as a hanging basket. The flowers (not prolific) are reminiscent of lobster claws and are usually yellow or red but grow this for the foliage; full sun. *
 
 
   
Lysimachia congestiflora ‘Outback Sunset’: Attractive yellow and green variegated foliage with yellow orange, bell-shaped flowers; 3-4’ but trails; excellent in containers.
 
 
   
Musa (Banana): If you want a tropical look in your garden, try one of these in full sun:
  ‘Basjoo’: Glossy green foliage; although designated as a tropical, has survived our winters for 2 years at Secrest Arboretum in Wooster where it is planted 2’ deep; 12’.*
‘Zebrina: Technically, this is an
Ensete, another Banana genus; green leaves with burgundy variegation; 4’.*

 
   
 
   
Nemesia: Best in containers; the new cultivars bloom well even in the heat of summer and the cool of Fall; prune back if they become lanky; the upright blue and white cultivars never stopped blooming last summer; the trailing Sunsatias also bloom well; full sun to partial shade. ‘Cranberry’, ‘Lemon’ and ’Coconut’ (white) are mounded and trailing. 'Berries and Cream' is a fragrant purple with a delightful white and purple speckled lip. Two other trailers are ‘Charm’ (red and white) and ‘Attraction’ (bright yellow and white). A new upright is ‘Opal Innocence’, an upright, iridescent lavender pink.
 
 
   
Nicotiana ‘Perfume Deep Purple’: This Flowering Tobacco was a 2005 Bedding Plant Award Winner; Nicotiana always known for its fragrance but many recent introductions sacrificed scent for color; deep purple star-shaped flowers give off hint of sweetness in the evening; 20" tall and spread of 15-18 " if planted in full sun; may not reach full size, in partial shade but will still perform well; also a good choice for container gardens. *
Oxalis:
 
  ‘Molten Lava: In low light, 'Molten Lava's foliage is chartreuse; in sunnier sites, it's golden yellow; golden yellow  flowers; 6-10" x  10-12".*
‘Zinfandel’: 6-10"; wine-red leaves with yellow flowers.

Penstemon ‘PhoenixTM Series: A quintessential classic, English cut flower; heat tolerant and vigorous; 18-24"; trumpet-like blossoms attract hummingbirds; sun or partial shade; treat as an annual but in excellent, well-drained soil may survive our winters.*  

 

 

 

Peppers:
 
  ‘Black Pearl’: This ornamental pepper has deep purple, almost black leaves with fruits that resemble black pearls when young, aging to bright red; foliage starts green but darkens when exposed to full sun; peppers are hot; grows 18" tall and 12-16" wide. *
     
  Chilly Chili’: A non-burning, child-safe pepper; 10" high and 14" wide; a 2002 All America selection; narrow fruit changes from greenish-yellow to orange and then to dark red; full sun. *
 
     
  ‘Explosive Ember’: A dark-leaved cultivar with purple to red-coned fruits that are hot; flowers are purple and white and the stems are purple; 10-14" tall; 8-10" wide. *
     
  Shu’: This one has cream and green variegated foliage; mild fruits begin white, turn to cream, yellow, gold, and then red; grow for its foliage, not for flavor; only 8-10" high.*
Petunia: (All are fragrant):
 
    Supertunia: Very heat and drought tolerant once established in the ground or pot; do not need deadheading to continue flowering nor do they become leggy; fast growth equals need for ample moisture and fertilizer; 6-12" x 36"; sun to bright shade .
Mini Supertunia: Slightly smaller, 6" x 24".
Surfinia: Cascading petunia, 6" x 40"

 
 
       
Phlox intensia:
 
  ‘Lavender Glow’: A free-flowering plant with excellent heat and cold tolerance; lovely lavender-pink flowers have bright white eyes; grow in moist, well- drained soil or combine it with other annuals in a container; has won awards from Florida to Maine, Colorado to Tennessee, flowering profusely under many climate conditions;    12-18"; sun or partial shade.*

Plectranthus ‘Cerveza ‘n Lime’: Soft, fuzzy, scalloped, lime-green foliage that is very drought tolerant; 14-18"; full sun or partial shade; citrus fragrance; deer resistant; combines well in containers.
 
   

 

 

 

Plumbago auriculata: Sky blue flowers on long stems; use on trellis or as trailer; sun or partial shade.*

Salvia farinacea ‘Evolution’: This new cultivar of the Mealycup Sage is purple, the darkest, densest, best branching and most weather resistant; 18"; full sun.*
 
 

 

 

 

Salvia guaranitica ‘Black and Blue’: Cobalt blue flower are strikingly accented with black calyces; grows 2-3’ feet tall; does well in summer heat and blooms most of the season; full sun.*

 

 

 

 

Sanseviera ‘Moonshine’: Forget all your notions of Mother-in-Law’s tongue; this cultivar is gorgeous and only 12" high; partial shade; take it in before the first frost and winter it over.*  

 

 

 

Scirpus cernuus (Fiber Optic Grass): Intriguing tufts of glossy, thread-like leaves growing to a length of up to 12’’ with minute white seed heads on the tips of each leaf, the very image of a fiber optic lamp; a water lover; light shade to part sun; also makes an excellent house plant, tolerating lower light as long as its feet are soggy.*
 

 

 

 

 

Snapdragon ‘Montego Blush’: Soft mauvy pink /pale yellow bicolor; only 8-10"; sun to half day sun.*
 
 

 

 

 

Stipa tenusissima (Mexican Feather Grass): Very finely textured, green foliage; when in flower, is 12-18"; flower looks like pale gold extension of foliage; quite beautiful; full sun.*
 
 

 

 

 

Trifolium ‘Dark Dancer’: Vigorous grower with dark clover-shaped leaves that are edged with bright green; looks like an Oxalis; white summer flowers; can be aggressive; is actually a perennial so use only in a container unless you need a groundcover; 3-6".*
 
 

 

 

 

Vinca:
 
  ‘Illumination’: A cultivar of the common Vinca that we plant as a shade groundcover but also useful in hanging baskets; bright yellow with green edge; sun or shade.
Wojo’s Gem’: This one has a large creamy-white blaze in the middle of each leaf; sun or shade
.
 
 
     
Xanthosoma aurea ‘Lime Zinger’: Huge, chartreuse Elephant Ear; sun to bright light; will grow in moist garden or container, boggy soil, or even in water; 2-4’.    

 

 

 

 


 

Zinnia ‘Zowie Yellow Flame’: A new bicolor zinnia with excellent branching; inside of petals is scarlet but outer half is yellow; center is scarlet; 24-29"; sun.*
